Nick started birdwatching as a child in
Dorset and has since travelled widely but his roots are still
firmly in Dorset. He ran a YOC group (now known as the RSPB Young
Explorers) in Poole for 10 years with Jackie including taking
a group of teenagers to Portugal on a Conservation Holiday for
the RSPB. He is one of the regular leaders on the RSPB Birdboats
round Poole Harbour. Nick has also been very involved with the
Dorset Bird Club and is soon to take on a new role as Editor of
their Newsletter.
Jackie began birdwatching over 25 years ago and ran a YOC group
in Middlesex. After moving to Dorset in 1986 and meeting Nick,
together they started up a YOC group in Poole, which they gave
up when they moved to Fordingbridge, on the edge of the New Forest.
Jackie is currently the Chairman of the Dorset Bird Club after
two years as Editor of the Dorset Bird Report.
Together they have a wide interest in natural history but their
main passion is birdwatching and passing on their knowledge, experience
and enthusiasm to others. They also run adult education classes
in birdwatching for Ringwood School and Poole Adult Education
in the New Forest and Poole Harbour areas.
They have led many guided walks for the Poole & District RSPB
Group and for Dorset Bird Club. Also organising and leading mini-breaks
to birding hot spots around Britain.
With this experience, together with taking part in various bird
census works for the RSPB and BTO, they have gained expert local
knowledge of the Dorset, New Forest and West Hampshire and further
afield. Their hobby has led to birding in Europe, North America,
India and South Africa.
